Currently, we are looking for a Senior Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Officer to support our investment management activities as well as to drive further advancement of our Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS). In this role you are specifically working for the Impact Private Debt & Equity (IPD&E) department within Triodos Investment Management, where we manage a set of private debt & equity funds invested in both Europe and emerging markets which cover the themes of the Energy Transition, Sustainable Food & Agriculture and Financial Inclusion as well as nature-based solutions (under development). This role offers an exciting opportunity to drive impactful change while embedding ESG principles into our core impact investment strategy.

How you will make a difference

You will help us to ''change finance to finance change'', by being the project lead of the design and integration of an improved ESMS covering all our investments at IPD&E. In the first year this will require most of your time. Gradually the focus will shift to leading the growing ESG team.

Together with co-workers you will:

  • show strategic leadership: develop, implement and oversee the IPD&E ESG strategy ensuring alignment with business goals, the Triodos Bank Minimum standards and applicable international sustainability standards such as the IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability and sustainability regulations such as SFDR and EU Taxonomy requirements;
  • ensure policy development: contribute to the development and establishment of key policies and tooling on ESG that reflect best practices and regulatory;
  • further develop performance monitoring: lead the further development of the ESMS to ensure environmental, social and governance considerations are fully integrated in the investment process. Prepare reports and collect data for stakeholders including the management board, supervisory board of the funds and investors;
  • conduct risk management: conduct due diligence and periodic monitoring of investments which implies: assessment of the ESG risks and impacts of the investments at the different stages of the investment process;
  • regularly interact with our investment teams, partners and engage with investees to identify opportunities to improve their ESG performance;
  • act as the ESG ambassador promoting awareness and to emphasize the strategic importance of ESG risk analysis. Provide training, guidance, and tools to ensure that investment teams understand and can incorporate ESG considerations into their processes effectively;
  • communicate with investors on ESG risk management and representation at industry events upon necessity and as required by the fund managers or other relevant stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Master’s degree preferably in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Social Sciences, or a related field;
  • At least 7 years of professional experience in a relevant ESG position in a development financial institution, impact investment fund or asset manager related to private debt or equity investments appraising ESG issues;
  • Strong knowledge of international ESG standards, such as the IFC Performance Standards and Equator Principles, and sustainability regulations such as SFDR and EU Taxonomy;Strong drive to collaborate on executing impact investments while upholding environmental, social and governance standards.
  • Proven ability to combine your knowledge and experience on ESG risk management with influencing skills in order to engage effectively with internal teams, investees, and other stakeholders;
  • Proven ability to assess complex environmental and social risks and translate these into actionable investment insights.
  • You can both act independently and work with others from various teams, whilst managing different responsibilities.
  • A demonstrable personal connection with sustainability, and alignment with the values and mission of Triodos Bank;
  • Fluency in English is essential. Working knowledge of languages spoken in the markets we operate in, such as Spanish and French, is a plus;
  • Experience in renewable energy, agriculture, forestry or nature restoration, financial inclusion or in the most pertinent ESG themes in these sectors (e.g. stakeholder engagement, land acquisition and resettlement, biodiversity, operational health and safety, E&S management) is a plus;
  • A valid work permit for the European Union and live in the Netherlands.
